2016 Decorating with Pantone's Color of the Year Fiesta

Fiesta, named Pantone's color of the year for 2016, is a spicy addition to home decorating. Here are some ways to incorporate the color into your home.

Vibrant color doesn't always have to come into a room through the wall paint. Sometimes that may be too much of the color. A richer way to incorporate vibrant color is through drapes, furnishings, and accents. Fiesta and white stripe drapes or solid fiesta silk dupioni drapes are a luxurious touch to any room.

The perfect bedding with the silk dupioni drapes adds a hint of pattern to the room along with a colored lamp in a reddish hue.

If using wall paint, the option to have an accent wall along with splashes of the wall color in accessories, vases, and even a sofa can be a great way to incorporate the fiery color fiesta.

Kitchen cabinets are becoming more popular in vivid colors like blues and red hues paired with white quartz, marble, or granite counter tops.

If you aren't sure about adding a robust color like fiesta to your decorating yet, then start small with just one focus on the color in the room. Just the chairs, or just the drapes. Later, you can always add more or just keep it simple.

Unique Nursery Design Ideas

Preparing a nursery before a baby arrival is both exhausting and fun. There are so many ideas to do with paint from room stripes, plaids, accent walls and more that it is often difficult deciding how to make your baby's room unique, whimsical, and fun. These are a few of our favorites and how to recreate the look.

1) Sherwood Forest Nursery: This nursery is fit for a princess with white trees recreating a forest, silver satin cartridge pleat drapes, and a princess chandelier. There are princess dresses hung in the corner for fantasy dress up and a perfect table for a tea party in the middle of the play area.

To recreate the look paint the walls in Behr's Premium Plus Primer and Paint in one color "lap Pool blue". Then with chalk draw lines from ceiling to the floor. The lines don't need to be straight because trees themselves aren't straight. Paint the trees in white and add gray lines throughout to create a bark look.

Add silver satin cartridge pleat drapes and a chandelier with strung glass or crystals.

The same Sherwood Forest room can be created with a gray paint like Behr's "Cathedral Grey" and kelly green satin drapes. The white trees, black and white tie backs and black nursery furniture are sure to captivate. A branch curtain rod adds to the forest theme.

2) Cottage Nursery: This nursery creates a cottage chic theme with white and yellow furniture, a gray and yellow quatrefoil rug, and gray and yellow damask drapes. To recreate this look use Benjamin Moore's Perspective gray for the top part of the wall and Benjamin Moore's Wall Street gray for the bottom portion of the wall. To break up the two colors you can tape the white wall prior to painting with Frog painters tape 1 1/2" wide or use a white chair rail. Hang small mirrors and pictures in gray and yellow.

Add a gray and yellow quatrefoil pattern rug like this one.

3) Modern Baby: This nursery also uses yellow and gray as the primary colors. Because these colors are gender neutral and many people decide to wait to find out the sex of the baby, these colors along with the modern chevron stripes and quatrefoil patterns will work for any child. Recreate this room with solid walls in Benjamin Moore's "Melted Butter" and an accent stripe wall in "Barnwood" and "Espresso Bean". The drapes by AD Couture Home are a charcoal quatrefoil. The Crib and dresser in white will brighten the space. Use letter decals for the name with the first letter made from styrofoam using yellow flowers glued to it as an accent.

Add a yellow hand hooked chevron rug and a crystal chandelier to complete the look.

4) Transitional Nursery: Subtle blue walls with orange and espresso stripe curtains, espresso transitional crib to bed, and white chair and accents, make this the perfect nursery to grow with  a littler one. To recreate the nursery paint the walls in Benjamin Moore's "mystical blue". Horizontal stripe drapes can be done in orange and espresso like pictured or in a subtle blend of espresso and white. There are many styles of the horizontal stripe drapes to create a unique look for your nursery. The ones pictured are called the Kyndal Stripe

Add a white upholstered rocker, espresso crib and some wall art to complete the nursery.

One of the most important details to add to a nursery is blackout lining to the drapes. When drapes are closed and lined with blackout, they will make the nursery dark so nap time for your little one is relaxing and dark. Blackout lining also assists with insulation adding temperature control in a room by keeping the room cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Make Quick and Easy Strawberry Preserves

Strawberry season means purchasing a lot of strawberries for the family and then realizing everyone has stopped eating them, and I will need to throw them out after leaving them in the fridge long enough to watch them wilt. At the point of wilting I realize no one will eat these. Instead of watching them wilt and throwing them away this time, I decided to use this preserve recipe. It is great spreadable jam on toast, bagels, peanut butter sandwiches and more. This recipe is for a smaller batch that is fast and easy, but you can always double the recipe for larger batches.

Ingredients:
2 cups strawberries (hulled and cut in 1/4 pieces)
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon lemon zest

Questions

1. Why do I use lemon in strawberry preserves? Citrus has high levels of Pectin (a polysaccharide), which is a thickening agent. Pectin in the lemon will thicken the preserves to a spreadable gel consistency.

2. How do I hull a strawberry? Cut around the leaves at the top of the strawberry and remove the cap.

3. How do I zest a lemon? Grate the lemon peel on a fine grater or zester.

4. How do I know when the preserves have become the right consistency? Before you begin making the preserves put a plate in the freezer. You can check to see if the preserves are thick enough by putting a drop of the fluid on the frozen plate and seeing if it is a gel consistency.

Directions:

Put strawberries, lemon juice, and zest in a sauce pan. Add sugar and cook over medium heat until boiling. Continue to cook and stir 15 min or until mixture thickens.

Check to see if mixture is thick by putting the drop of mixture on the chilled freezer plate. Let the mixture cool completely before pouring into a glass canning jar.

2016 Vivid Colors to Decorate With That Are Sure to Captivate

Our favorite Pantone colors of 2016 are the vivid colors that truly captivate the eye. Many people are skeptical decorating with such bright colors. Often people will paint a room with a vivid color and then have difficulty adding decor to coordinate.

1) Why not paint the room Sherwin Williams color of the year for 2016, Alabaster White, or Benjamin Moore's version of Alabaster. This will give the room a clean fresh start for decorating.

Any Vivid color will go with Alabaster white leaving a wealth of options for drapes, pillows, vases, throw rugs, etc.
Choosing the simple colors and the neutrals for paint and furniture is the easiest way to decorate without the hassle of matching the paint.

2) Use the bright and fun Pantone colors, such as, snorkel blue or Limpet Shell in drapes and pillows . . .

These gorgeous cobalt, deep sea, or mist silk dupioni drapes by AD Couture Home are the perfect pop of color

Drapes can be custom made in solid or stripe designs incorporating other colors to create the perfect look for your decor space
